CHIPPENDALE WALKOFF LEADS MIDDLESEX PAST CAMDEN 6-5 IN 10
Colby Chippendale delivered pinch runner Thomas Massaro with an RBI single to right with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning as Middlesex College topped Camden County College 6-5 in the Colts home opener.
Shayne Salvesen (Freshman/Old Bridge, NJ) allowed just two hits and struck out 11 over the first seven innings before yielding to Gage Bendix (Freshman/Piscataway, NJ) and Chrstian Petrillo (Freshman/North Brunswick, NJ), who picked up the win.
Camden jumped on the board first on a two-run home run in the second, but Middlesex answered back with three in the bottom of the frame.
Giovanni Aresta (Freshman/Old Bridge, NJ) led the inning off with a single and came in to score on an RBI double by Tyler Johnson (Freshman/Bayonne, NJ). Braden Ramirez (Freshman/Middlesex, NJ) followed with a triple and came in to score on a sac fly by Chippendale to give the Colts (2-2) a 3-2 lead.
Middlesex added two important insurance runs in the seventh and again, Chippendale was in the middle of the rally. The freshman from North Port, Florida led off the inning with a single. Christopher Born (Freshman/South Plainfield, NJ) and Petrillo each reached on bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. The Colts were able to plate runs on a sacrifice fly and fielders choice by Luke Monsorno (Freshman/Hillsborough, NJ) and Connor Luckie (Freshman/Hamilton, NJ), respectively.
Camden (1-1) tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for Chippendale's herocis in the tenth.
With one out in the bottom of the tenth, Johnson reached on an error and was pinch run for by Massaro (Freshman/South Plainfield, NJ). Jordan Brown (Freshman/Piscataway, NJ) delivered a key two-out single to move Massaro into scoring position. With two outs, Chippendale hit an outside pitch to right. Massaro got a good jump on contact and slid head-first into home ahead of the throw, which was high and late.
Chippendale was 2-4 with two RBIs and a run to lead the charge for the Colts. Aresta went 3-4 with a run scored and Petrillo and Brown added two hits each.
Middlesex and Camden turn right around for a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch of Game 1 schedueld for noon at Camden.
