Stanley Bobadilla had two hits in each game and Maurice Hedderman and Jayden Mercado gave the Colts solid starts on the mound as Middlesex College swept a home doubleheader from Orange CC.
Middlesex won Game 1 by a score of 8-3 and followed that up with a 5-3 win in the nightcap. The Colts have now won 7 of their past 9 games and are 11-5 on the season.
In Game 1, Middlesex fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Colts maintained consistent pressure on offense, scoring runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings on their way to the five-run victory.
Alfredo Gonzalez led the offense with 3 hits, a run and an RBI. Chase Trolaro, Elvys Quezada and Bobadilla had two hits each for Middlesex in support of Hedderman, who gave the Colts much needed length and effectiveness on the mound. The sophomore lefty picked up his first win of the season, going 6 innings while striking out 7.
Jaime Tamayo had 3 stolen bases, 2 runs and an RBI in the win as well.
LJ Aponte pitched the seventh to seal the win for Middlesex.
Game 2 proved to be a closer contest as the Colts carried a slim 3-1 lead into the sixth. Orange CC tied the game with 2 runs in the top of the sixth, but Middlesex answered right back with 2 runs in their half of the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Quezada was a star in relief of Mercado, nailing down the final 2 outs in the sixth and then pitching a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
Mercado worked the first 5 innings and allowed just 1 run with 5 strikeouts. He picked up his third win of the season for the Colts.
John Oranchak was the catalyst for the Middlesex offense. The sophomore right fielder had 2 hits and scored 2 runs while stealing 3 bases.
Tamayo and Bobadilla added 2 hits each for the Colts in the win.
Middlesex returns to the diamond on Tuesday when they face off against Bergen CC in a key Region 19 series. The Colts will host a home doubleheader on Tuesday to kick off the series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00PM.
